SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Jefferson Clinton officials say cab drivers have ultimately helped attract people to both the hotel and to the downtown area. That's why Tuesday is being called "Taxi Appreciation Day."

From 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. cab drivers in Syracuse have been invited to get a free lunch and refreshments at the hotel. Representatives from Mayor Driscoll's office will also be on hand to recognize drivers as the "gatekeepers of the city."

"We're working with the mayor's office. The mayor will issue a proclamation proclaiming Taxi Appreciation Day. And, we recognize here at the Jefferson Clinton Hotel, we recognize the work our local cab drivers do as ambassadors to the city if you will," said the hotel's Irving Lyons Jr.

Drivers we spoke to at the South Salina Street hub are appreciative of the acknowledgement.

Hotel officials say they hope to do this every year.

Taxi Driver Appreciation

by Charley Hannagan

Syracuse Post Standard

Tuesday June 17, 2008, 1:20 PM

Syracuse, NY--About 25 to 30 drivers have shown up so far for a free lunch from the Jefferson Clinton Hotel in recognition of Taxi Appreciation Day.

"Taxi drivers are unappreciated and this is our way of saying 'thank you'," said Timothy Bacon, one of the senior managers of the hotel in downtown Syracuse.

Drivers were treated to sandwiches, soda, coffee and fruit from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday. The hotel doesn't limit its appreciation to one day, Bacon said. The staff often asks drivers who are waiting on guests to have a cup of coffee and a piece of fruit, he said.

2 Mentions for the Jefferson Clinton Hotel!  #1 and #5

Horse-drawn rides through Downtown and ice-skating in Clinton Square started over the Thanksgiving weekend. If those images put you in the mood for romance, here's a list of places Downtown to meet your sweetie and stroll under holiday lights.

1. Spend the night in an historic hotel. Book a suite at the Jefferson Clinton Hotel, formerly the Hawthorne Suites, 416 S. Clinton St., 425-0500, www.jeffersonclintonhawthorn.com. The hotel offers some special packages where the rooms come with wine, truffles or Swedish massages.

2. Ice skate at night under the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree in Clinton Square. The skating rink is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and school breaks, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. The cost is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children under 12. Skate rentals are $3.

3. Try Syracuse's version of a horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park. The Downtown Committee is providing free tours of downtown with horse-drawn wagon rides - with Santa.

The Armory Square Association is offering free horse-drawn trolley tours of the Walton and Franklin Street area with historian-actor Scott Peal narrating the tour as "Abe Walton, " among the area's first urban visionaries and entrepreneurs.

Ride with Santa through downtown from noon to 3 p.m. every Saturday through Dec. 22; board at the corner of Salina and Washington streets. Ride with Abe through Armory Square noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays through Dec. 15; board at the corner of Franklin and Walton streets.

4. Stroll the shops in Armory Square and stop by Sweet on Chocolate, 215 Walton St., and buy an indulgent truffle for a midday snack.

5. Need a warm-up? Snuggle together in the lobby of the Jefferson Clinton Hotel, which is offering free afternoon tea with hot chocolate and pastries from noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays through Dec. 15. The tea is also sponsored by the Armory Square Association.

6. Stroll through the Delavan Art Gallery, 501 W. Fayette St., 425-7500, www.delavanartgallery.com. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

If you work up an appetite with all that walking, downtown restaurants have plenty of cozy tables for two. And don't worry about making it back to put money in the meter. The city of Syracuse is providing free metered parking in the Central Business District Fridays and Saturdays now through Dec. 29.
